AUDITION UPDATES:
The next opportunity for families to try for a seat at a magnet school with space is through participation in the reassignment/transfer process. This process is handled by Student Placement, and it opens February 1st. The list of schools with space and the link to apply will be housed at www.cmschoice.org starting February 1st. These requests ARE processed in a first come, first serve basis. The deadline for families to apply and receive a result before the 2024-2025 school year starts is July 15th (June 30th for early and middle college programs).
Students will continue to be auditioned through June. Families that want to apply to other Magnet Programs for the Lottery may do so and still schedule a future audition for NWSA. Auditioning for NWSA after placement in another Magnet Program does not jeopardize placement in the other program. If your child is placed in another magnet program through the lottery, but then passes their audition for NWSA, simply let us know if they still want to attend NWSA and we can bring the student in through a request for student transfer. Passing an audition is no guarantee of placement at NWSA. All of the above is based on space availability by grade and by major and is subject to change.
We strongly encourage ALL CURRENT APPLICANTS to finalize the enrollment process prior to March 1, 2024, as this is when we typically receive staffing allotments. We will continue to audition students into the spring and summer (with the chance of being "waitlisted" increasing after staffing allotments have been announced). Please communicate this with your child so they have realistic expectations and understand that a spot at NWSA is not guaranteed, even if they pass their audition.
Thank you for your interest in our school!
WE ARE NWSA. One of the only magnet programs in Charlotte Mecklengburg School system that provides specialized arts instruction for students in grades 6-12. Northwest School of the Arts develops artists through intensive pre-professional training in the visual or performing arts, combined with a strong academic foundation.
NWSA holds auditions for all students who wish to enroll. The CMS School Choice Lottery is the way most students are admitted to our school after a passed audition. Students are offered admission based on entering the CMS School Choice Lottery and after a passed audition. In the event there are more students who have auditioned than there are seats available, those students are placed on a waiting list for possible admission if a seat should become available. The CMS School Choice Lottery is the way most students are admitted to our school after a passed audition. We are now planning for "Fall" Auditions to place students at the school for the 2024-25 school year. If your child has not yet been scheduled, the Fall audition information dates/deadlines will apply to them. Passing an audition during the lottery period provides the best chance to be placed at our school. Please be sure to pay attention to the Dates and Deadlines section.
Students at NWSA concentrate in arts areas, or "majors." Middle school students are only permitted to major in one arts area, even if they pass two auditions. High school students are able to major in more than one area. The "Audition at NWSA" tab (above) contains an Audition Process Checklist to help you manage the process. The checklist only covers essential steps, so please review the website entirely. Follow the steps, observe dates and deadlines, and make sure your child prepares for their audition or portfolio review using the Audition Requirements! I'm available to answer questions after you have reviewed the information on this website. Check out the other tabs on the menu above for lots of information about our school! We would also love for you to join us at an Information Session or Daytime School Tours!
Best of luck and "break a leg"!
